A Nonseparable Amenable Operator Algebra Which Is Not Isomorphic to a C∗-algebra
It has been a longstanding problem whether every amenable operator algebra is isomorphic to a (necessarily nuclear) C∗-algebra. In this note, we give a nonseparable counterexample. The existence of a separable counterexample remains an open problem.
متن کاملThe Measure Algebra as an Operator Algebra
Introduction. In § I, it is shown that M(G)*, the space of bounded linear functionals on M(G), can be represented as a semigroup of bounded operators on M(G). Let A denote the non-zero multiplicative linear functionals on M(G) and let P be the norm closed linear span of A in M(G)*. In § II, it is shown that P , with the Arens multiplication, is a commutative J3*-algebra with identity. Thus P = ...
متن کاملAsymptotic homomorphisms into the Calkin algebra ∗
Let A be a separable C∗-algebra and let B be a stable C∗-algebra with a strictly positive element. We consider the (semi)group Ext(A,B) (resp. Ext(A,B)) of homotopy classes of asymptotic (resp. of genuine) homomorphisms from A to the corona algebra M(B)/B and the natural map i : Ext(A,B) −→ Ext(A,B). We show that if A is a suspension then Ext(A,B) coincides with E-theory of Connes and Higson an...
متن کاملMasas in the Calkin Algebra without the Continuum Hypothesis
Methods for constructing masas in the Calkin algebra without assuming the Continuum Hypothesis are developed.
متن کاملA Stably Contractible C*-algebra Which Is Not Contractible
We exhibit a separable commutative C*-algebra A such that A⊗K is homotopy equivalent to zero, without Mn(A) being so for any n ≥ 1.
